Before: the owners liked their house; they just wished there were more of it. Particular needs were: a music room, an in-law suite, a basement level storage bay for the boat, and an upper level open rec room with its own steps (i.e., not accessible from the rest of the second floor).
Before: the addition will be to the left side of the home, and cannot overshadow the home. To keep the new ridge below the existing, I had to get creative with the roof geometry!
After: the addition's second floor is smaller than the first in order to mirror the existing second story over the existing garage. Also note that I designed some decorative gables over the garage and the middle of the existing home to repeat the new gable on the addition and tie it all together.
After: the in-law suite and the boat storage bay face the rear yard.
After: the owners' boat now fits in the basement level storage bay, accessible from the rear.
After: the existing porch roof plane extends over the front of the new addition. The porch columns and rails were also redesigned to avoid the "toothpick" effect of too-small posts.
